These upcoming photos and last part of the Grand Encampment series are of a few tractors I found in a field. The first two photos are of a large piece of machine that I’m unsure what it was really used for but it was full of pulleys and had a shoot coming out of the back-end so it might have been a hay bale maker or something or that nature.

This last photo is of a placard off a Caterpillar Tractor from 1918. As you can see on the edge of this placard the original yellow paint was still visible on some of this old piece of machinery.

Here is part one of the Grand Encampment, this town along the Colorado-Wyoming border was, at the turn of the twentieth century, a booming center of copper mining and smelting. At one point a sixteen-mile tramway was built to carry copper ore from the mountains into the town for smelting. This steam-powered tramway was, at the time, the longest in the world. A sharp drop in copper prices and disastrous fires drove the mining company into bankruptcy. Mining operations ceased in the early twentieth century.

Above is a placarded found on a mining cart found inside town reading, T Miner &Smelter Supply Company. This mine cart was most likely used to move copper ore from the mountains in to town where it would be smelted and sold.

Above is what is known as the Tie Hack Cabin. These cabins were located in what we’re called tie hack camps. They would sleep 6-8 men in one cabin. They cut logs all winter long which is how they earned their nickname as “Tie Hackers”. Once spring came and the snow melted, they hauled the logs to the river and rode them to Ft. Steele which is where they were then shipped to the train yards.
